What is the background of the project?
The aims of the surgical treatment in breast cancer include local regional disease control and good aesthetic and functional outcome, as well. Therefore, the surgical challenge is to minimize local and regional recurrences, without unnecessary decrease in the quality of life. The project aims to evaluate, if the low local regional recurrence rates remain low or even decrease, despite of less invasive breast and axillary surgery.
What is the aim of the project?
To teach the student current principles of diagnosis and surgical treatment of breast cancer to optimize patient outcome, regarding local and regional recurrences as well as quality of life.
What techniques and methods are used?
Attending breast surgeries, assisting surgeries, case discussions with the consultant surgeons. Observing multidisciplinary meetings. Student's are not allowed to work with patients independently.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Everything is done under supervision except searching and reading literature.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Articles and books provided for reading. Multidisciplinary meetings.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Good social skills, interest in surgery and oncology and fluent English skills.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Student needs to understand and respect confidentiality of the patient data.
