Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis , it’s high prevalence , especially in elderly people and high rates of disability related to disease makes it leading cause of disability in elderly. As per the statistical evidence from World Health Organization (WHO), 9.6% of men and 18% women above the age of 60 years suffer from symptomatic clinical Osteoarthritis worldwide. As per the traditional knowledge, Osteoarthritis flares up in cold weather. The association between weather conditions and clinical profile will be studied with different parameters. It is important to note here that This research aims to focus on primary graded osteoarthritis.
What is the aim of the project?
The study aims to correlate weather conditions and changes in pain perception of subjects with knee osteoarthritis. We expect to establish a relation between the weather conditions and pain perception in patients of osteoarthritis on basis of analysis of collected data.
What techniques and methods are used?
1)Data collection: The Sample Data is collected at Orthopedics Outpatient Department of Dr. Vasantrao Pawar Medical college, Hospital and Research center 2)Ethics approval would be established 3) The patients who are Clinically Diagnosed knee osteoarthritis on the basis of: pain, swelling, range of movement, X-ray of knee anterior and lateral aspect are asked to fill questionnaire form in 3 different seasons 4) Pain is analyzed by visual analogue scale in 3 different seasons. 6) The period for which research will be done is one year and patients are followed up either at OPD or home-home visits by researcher or co-researchers. 7) The patients are observed for three different seasons: Summer (March-June) Rainy (July-September) Winter (October- February) 8)Result are made from collected data and is to be presented at college level for approval.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- If the project is clinical
- the student will take active part in the clinical examination
- If the project is clinical
- the student will be allowed to work with patients
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student is expected to take a round in wards and OPD. The student will have to interact with various old aged patients and enquire whether or not they are suffering from osteoarthritis which is a very common condition in old aged patients. Once the patients having osteoarthritis are identified, the student will have to ask various questions and fill a questionnaire provided to the patient. The questionnaire consists of various questions whose answers need to be evaluated for analysis purposes to attain pin point results and further discussions and further development of the study in this area.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, There would be preliminary theory classes twice a week for the incomings to explain them the clinical and surgical basis of Osteoarthritis. The student will be taught by the senior residents and professors of the concerned departments when the student takes rounds of the department.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report - The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Communication skills and Basic knowledge about knee OA pain. Communication skills are required because the student will have to ask various questions according to the questionnaire to the patients so the communication skills of the student will play a major role in developing a good rapport with the patient so that the patient answers the questions accurately and thus increase the authenticity of the project. The student should also have basic knowledge about Knee OA so that the student can play an active role in the analysis of the results moreover the knowledge about OA pain will make the student take accurate history of the patient and according to the history he will be able to judge the case to a certain extent.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
