Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Research and development of new drugs is a complex, time consuming and which integrates a series of steps that include the synthesis of potential, the planning of the molecules, the identification of the molecules preclinical toxicological tests, clinical trials, marketing of the drug and pharmacovigilance. NEFATOX integrates researchers (internal and external to UNIFACISA) from health and other areas (chemistry, biology, statistics) interested in the study of drugs and medicines from the preclinical point of view (in vitro, in vivo, ex vivo) and for pharmacological (pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic) and toxicological profile assessment (acute, subacute and chronic toxicity; clinical; toxicokinetics) of new drugs or natural or synthetic products.
What is the aim of the project?
Experimental and analytical Toxicology, Pharmacokinetics and Toxicokinetics of Natural Products and bioactive synthetics with clinical and preclinical studies of product efficacy and safety synthetic and natural bioactive.
What techniques and methods are used?
Analysis of drugs and metabolites in biological material by methods (high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection –HPLC-PDA, with fluorescence detector, HPLC-FLD, Gas chromatography with Flame Ionisation Detection – GC-FID – and with mass spectrometry – GC-MS) for the purpose of studies pharmacokinetics, toxicokinetics, therapeutic and metabolism control. The Committee for Ethics in Animal Use - Ceua of the Center for Higher Education and Development - Cesed was created to evaluate the ethical aspects of experimental procedures involving animal use at Unifacisa. The commission was set up to comply with current laws applicable to the use of animals for teaching and research, adopting the 3 Rs principle (replace, reduce and refine) and considering the need to apply the five freedoms of animal welfare. CEUA is comprised of veterinarian, biologist, faculty and researchers in the specific field and a representative of the animal welfare and protection society. Unifacisa was one of the first Institutions that complied with Law 11.794 / 2008, obtaining its accreditation with Concea through the Register of Institutions for Scientific Use of Animals – Ciuca.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Research finds in the University, through teaching, research and extension activities, the favorable environment for its development. The production of scientific knowledge is closely associated with research and is committed to training not only researchers, but is also of fundamental importance for national development. The Research and Extension Center (NUPEX) was created to manage, supervise and implement the policy of scientific initiation and institutional extension, constituted by a coordination and a body of evaluating professors representing the courses of Unifacisa – Universitary Center In addition, it is expected that the student, during the exchange, accomplish bibliographic research about the study area.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
NO
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
- The student will prepare an abstract
- The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Knowledge in farmacology. Curiosity, proactive and being committed towards the project. Besides that, it is required writing skills, especially about scientific articles.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
