What is the background of the project?
Proctology is a medical subspecialty that encompasses diseases of the perianal area, anal canal, and rectum. Common conditions are hemorrhoids, fistulas and fissures, that are extremely frequent in the population of all ages. Most diagnosis are benign in nature. There are some proctological disorders for which surgery is recommended, in particular when conservative measures have been unable to cure the condition, or in order to prevent the condition from progressing. These surgical procedures could be performed in election or in urgency, two different aspects on which the project is focused on.
What is the aim of the project?
Recognizing the surgical pathology in election and in urgency and studying their prevalence
What techniques and methods are used?
The student will follow the general surgery department during the daily activites, participating, initially as an observer and then actively, in ward and on-call activities. On wensday the outpatient clinics is scheduled. On Monday and on Thursday the student will attend the operating room. Moreover, when necessary, the student will also be admitted in the operating room in urgency.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks of the student will be performed on his/her own
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will learn to discriminate and recognize and understand the pathologies that can be treated in an election and what in urgency. To this end, the student is asked to participate, initially as an observer and then actively, in ward and on-call activities, outpatient activities. He will follow the general surgery department during the daily activites. On wensday the outpatient clinics is scheduled. On Monday and on Thursday the student will attend the operating room. Moreover, when necessary, the student will also be admitted in IFMSA International Secretariat, c/o IMCC, Nørre Allé 14, 2200 København N., Denmark the operating room in urgency.

What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation - The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Predisposition to teamwork, desire to get involved in the project. Subjects passed: General Surgery Previous experience with: surgical department
