What is the background of the project?
Calcaneal fissures are a result of plantar hyperkeratosis in addition to skin dehydration and may or may not be accompanied by infections. Cutaneous xerosis, that is, dehydration of the skin, is caused by low water consumption, obesity, reduced functioning of the sweat glands and dermatological or endocrine pathologies such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM). A possible form of treatment for these cracks would be to use banana peel gel for better healing, since the banana has healing action and antimicrobial action against E. coli and S. aureus. Therefore, the use of herbal medicines in the treatment of various pathologies has been widely accepted due to their proven antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifungal capabilities.
What is the aim of the project?
In view of the underutilization of the pharmacological capacities of the immense Brazilian flora, the present project aims to analyze the action of the gel composed by 10% of the green banana peel of Musa sapientum species in the treatment of Calcaneals fissures.
What techniques and methods are used?
The study will be conducted with 60 patients, divided into two randomly selected groups. In the studied group, the gel will be used and in the control group, the conventional treatment. The lesions will be photographed and subsequently evaluated by the computer program Image J Student will have to fill all datas about patients, like name, age and others important informations that permit the scient to know about all patients in the research. All calcaneal fissures will be photographed after, and once a week for 4 weeeks. Some patients will be treated with usual protocol, and others will be treated with green banana peel gel. All of this activities will be execute by student with another brazilian student. All actitivies will be developed in NAENF. It is a Center that take care patients with chronic ulcers, and other kind of wounds. Our hypothesis is that green banana peel gel can be used to treat calcaneal fissures like it was used to treat chronic ulcers.

What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Student will help another Brazilian Students to take care of patients with calcaneal fissures, and he will understand about green banana peel gel in this treatment. Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Student should read and study about green banana peel gel, but there will be no theoretical teaching before the exchange program.
