Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Research comes in many kinds and forms. Though medical research is subdivided to experimental to clinical, there are many types of research which can apply to either or both, which can also be grouped into qualitative and quantitative research. Knowledge in qualitative and quantitative research is essential as research projects will still be a requirement in the future as a practicing physician in residency training and even in diplomate and fellowship trainings. This project entails a course on qualitative and quantitative research and an introductory course in research writing. It is a series of lectures on qualitative and quantitative research that will allow for the students to learn, gain more insight, and to properly distinguish one from the other. The students will then learn how to write a research proposal based on what they know on the topics.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of this project is for the students to properly distinguish qualitative and quantitative research and how to write a proposal based on the appropriateness of the type of research that will be applied on a given or derived topic.
What techniques and methods are used?
A series of lectures on qualitative and quantitative research will be given to the students, with quizzes and exams may be given to the students at the end of one or more lectures to check for mastery of the topic. The students will then be exposed to the Philippine environment that they will be able to discern the health needs of the people. From there, they will make a research proposal based on what they find essential to the society. The research proposal will then be based on the knowledge they gained on qualitative and quantitative research.
What is the role of the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
1. The student should be able to score at least 75% in each of the quizzes or exams based on the lectures. 2. The student should be able to immerse in the Philippine environment, and come up with a selection of research topics to be made into a research proposal. 3. The student should be able to make a research proposal based on his/her knowledge and application of qualititative and quantitative research, whichever is applicable to the case. The research proposal should include the Background of the Study, the Significance of the Study, the Review of Related Literature, and the Methodology containing the Research Design and Research Methods.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
There will be theoretical teaching provided in the form of lectures, courses, and self-reading by the students. The lectures and courses will be done by the tutor and associates. The lectures given will be introductory, the basics, and the advanced lessons on qualitative and quantitative research.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
- The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Knowledge in using MS Office applications, where needed.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
