What is the background of the project?
Please, provide the background of the project (Provide information about the project; min. 10 lines, max. 25 lines) Olfactory system is fundamental for human life yet its importance and systems have not been fully understood. Despite its effect on human survival, olfactory system is mandatory for diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson, Alzheimer’s etc. Also, different smells have different effects on human cognition and executive functioning. Especially memory functions have been one of the most researched topics in the related literature. Yet other functions such as spatial memory, vigilance, decision making and time estimation have not been investigated thoroughly. In Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Medicine, Department Of Biophysics, established and has 5 researches,Also In Turkey we have reports about diseases that are common in here.Today we know prevalence of epilepsy. From a population of 2187, 58 people, after filling in a questionnaire were suspected to have epilepsy .
What is the aim of the project?
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of different smells on human executive functioning.
What techniques and methods are used?
In order to examine aforementioned effects, first the sniff and sticks test will be applied to participants in order to evaluate their olfactory function. Following this procedure, three different smells will be delivered to the participants in three different sessions while they will complete cognitive task battery via PEBL (The Psychology Experiment Building Language). These tasks are specially aims to evaluate time estimation, decision making, spatial memory, vigilance and inhibition.evaluate the results of the research project with MS Excel and SPSS 26 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) - They are used for statistical analysis, data management (case selection, file reshaping, creating derived data) and data documentation
What is the role of the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The following tasks will be expected to be accomplished by the student: The student will be asked to complete literature review on the subject. The review will extend to minimum five years. Following that she/he will be demonstrated all olfactory and cognitive tests and will be supervised during first trials. After that student will collect data from participants, analyze the data via SPSS 26 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) and MS Excel (with supervision if necessary) and will present the finding at the end of their exchange. The student will be asked to discuss the findings by taking the literature review into consideration.

Will there be any theoretical teaching provided for the student (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars)? Please describe how much teaching and by whom. Basic information about olfactory system such as its neuroanatomy; and neurocognitive tests(Flanker Test, Trials AB, Stroop Effect, and Coordination Test) will be provided for students via presentations. The presentations will be given at least once per week, depending on the availability of Ass. Prof. Cagdas Guducu and Dr. Ipek Ergonul.
