NEEDLE-STICK INJURIES AND ITS DETERMINANTS AMONG THE HEALTHCARE WORKERS
Turkey (TurkMSIC) - Izmir Katip Celebi University, Izmir
IZMIR KATIP CELEBI UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE, PRIMARY CARE TRAINING UNIT, Cigli Main Campus, 35620, Cigli/Izmir
Assoc. Prof. MELIH KAAN SOZMEN
Research Assistant ESRA MELTEM
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Please, provide the background of the project (Provide information about the project; min. 10 lines, max. 25 lines) In healthcare institutions, there are occupational hazards that healthcare workers are exposed to in the work place. Healthcare workers are at risk of infection with blood borne pathogens and Needle Stick Injuries are major cause of blood borne infections transmitted among healthcare personnel. According to the Turkey Disease Control and Preventing Center's data; Needle Stick Injuries among healthcare workers are increasing by years, hospital workers reported an average of 385,000 Needle Stick Injuries per year and an average of 1000 perforating injuries per day. In this aspect we plan to make an extended literature review about Needle Stick Injuries and its determinants. A retrospective study regarding needle stick injuries will be the mainstay of the Project, and a face to face questionnaire will be used to determine the current state of needle stick injuries in Turkish healthcare.
What is the aim of the project?
The objective of the study is to explore the prevalence of needle-stick injuries and its determinants among the healthcare workers
What techniques and methods are used?
Literature review and research from Pubmed /Medline and other online sources to review the existing literature. - Review of our hospitals’ records regarding the number, etiology and epidemiology of needle stick injuries. -Data collection with the help of face to face interviews using a questionnaire prepared by our department to determine the current state of needle stick injuries in Turkish healthcare professionals. -Data analysis with the usage of SPSS 26 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) and MS Excel to analyze the project process.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- If the project is clinical
- the student will be allowed to work with patients
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student? (Minimum 10 lines, provide detailed explanation) The following tasks will be expected to be accomplished by the student: -Being able to do a literature review about Needle Stick Injuries cases and its determinants: The student will do literature research from Pubmed /medline and other online sources. We expect them to critically review the existing literature and fill the pre-prepared tables. The tables will be prepared by the supervisors beforehand. The selection of questions and preparation of data collection form will be completed with the students. If the data collection procedure can be completed during stay, data input can also be made by students. -Having information about questionnaire development and the usage of it - Observing the implementation of the questionnaire during the face to face interviews - Reviewing the hospital records alongside the tutor and helping catalogue the nature and epidemiology of needle stick injuries with Microsoft Excel and SPSS 26(Statistical Package for Social Sciences). - Participating in the literature review and cataloguing is optional but encouraged. -Data analysis of the project with the use of SPSS 26.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Presentations about: Creating a database using SPSS, how to do a literature review, developing a questionnaire and presenting data will be given at least once per week, depending on the availability of Assoc. Prof. MELIH KAAN SOZMEN.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
No spesific skills are required
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
