What is the background of the project?
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in Romania. In 2016, there were approximately 7000-9000 new cases of breast cancer. About 40.000 women were living with the disease. Furthermore, in Romania, in the last decade, the experts from all university centers noticed an alarming increase of colorectal cancer (CCR) incidence. The activity of the project will include genetic diagnostic tests for patients with breast and colorectal cancers from cross-border Romania-Serbia area in order to correct and find diagnosis, as well as administration of optimal medication. Nowadays, most students and doctors know the practical application of the genome sequencing project but their practical skills are limited due to the lack of access to such methods of diagnosis. The project assesses the evolution and prognosis and the implementation of high precise oriented treatment in breast and colorectal cancers.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to develop and implement centers of excellence in complementary and synergistic medicine in Timisoara and Pozarevac for modern screening tests that allow genetic risk analysis.
What techniques and methods are used?
We will use sequencing technology in order to compare healthy and mutated Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in order to provide a more individualized medical care. The sequencing starts with the sample preparation. Samples will be aquired by using DNA extraction kits, as well as cloning procedures and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). After extraction, the quality and quantity of nucleic acids will be assessed using spectrophotometry and electroforesis. The high-quality samples will be sequenced and the data will be analised and interpreted. Molecular diagnostics offers the prospect of personalised medicine by analysing the specifics of the patient and their disease. We will use techniques such as Polymerase chain reaction-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (PCR-ELISA) . By using PCR we will increase the number of nucleic acid molecules from the patient sample. This way we we receive genetic information from tumors, such as cancerous cells mutations. The informations will be analysed and interpreted.

What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will take assist the lab work hands-on, meaning that he or she will have to: - Attend the theoretical teaching - Attend the practical seminars and workshops, organised by the departament - Prepare the samples for analysing - Learn how to use the laboratory equipment - Aquire practical skills and expertise in sequencing technology, thus overcoming the differences in molecular diagnostic training - Sequencing DNA fragments - Interpret the results
