Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
There are no data regarding dengue fever in the capital. Capital has it is special circumstances, one hand there is continuous movements between different states and the capital, on the other hand capital shares boarders with state of kassala and northern state. Omdurman city constitutes a large part of the capital, it is main hospitals serve huge number of population, some are referred directly from different states of Sudan. Putting in mind the presence of Aedese Egyptii in capital, non-specific presentation of dengue fever ,it is serious complications in pediatrics and the unavailability of diagnostic test in Sudan, this research will provide preliminary valuable data to the health authorities.
What is the aim of the project?
To determine the incidence and Seroprevelance of Dengue fever virus In patient with acute febrile illness attending emergence room in Omdurman teaching hospital and pediatric hospital , Alfath hospital ,tropical area hospital.
What techniques and methods are used?
Literature review: Will use systematic review Data collection: Patients presented with acute febrile illness will be counseled regarding dengue fever, highlighting its prevalence in Omdurman and its non-specific presentation. After explaining the nature of the study and its medical importance, volunteers will be asked to sign an informed consent. Then a structured questionnaire will be filled during personal interview. Three ml of blood will be collected under aseptic technique in plain tubes, one drop will used for NS1 rapid test while the rest will be allowed to clot and centrifuged at room temperature. Then serum will be stored at -20 c until it is processed using semi-automated enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. Data management and analysis plan: Data is will be collected in a quantitative base by a questionnaire and we will use IBM-SPSS program for data analysis. Analysed data will be represented by the following methods: Table Hectograph Bare chart Pie chart Ethical consideration: We thank Omdurman Islamic University for providing us with a written ethical approval to conduct our research study. After consideration of patient autonomy, beneficence and confidentiality, we will obtain verbal consent from females at the site of data collection.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks of the student will be performed on his/her own
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Prior to starting up with the research process the student is expected to spend some time to get familiar with the basics. With the help of the coordinators of the program, this is made possible through: • Attending lectures related to the topic of interest • Doing further literature review to build a reliable database related to the research topic • Attending a brief course on scientific research methodology • Visiting hospitals, health care centers and pharmacies to get hold of the Sudanese health care system and its main problems Following that, the student will proceed with the main program, starting up with a meeting that gathers the research team in order to set up a working plan and design the research questionnaire. The list of objectives shall include: 1. Collecting data and interviewing the patients 2. Withdrawing blood specimens from compatible, volunteer patients. 3. Analyzing the data to extract relevant results 4. Preparing the final report and presenting it with team members 5. Based on the research results the student shall participate in a small awareness campaigns about anti-mosquito measures Making a relevant policy that serves as a preventive measure be presented to interested parties
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, through the exchange there will be numerous lectures with students who study the same topic, about the topic and research methodology and will be presented by the tutor.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster - The student will prepare a scientific report - The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Nothing but motivation and curiosity, because we will cover all the needed basics through theoretical teaching.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
