What is the background of the project?
Schistosomiasis occurs along river basisn.Tono dam has been there since 1975.Has it lead to an increase in the occurrence of Schistosomiasis?Is bladder cancer a risk? Schistosomiasis is being successfully controlled in many countries but remains a major public health problem, with an estimated 200 million people infected, mostly in Africa. Few countries in this region have undertaken successful and sustainable control programmes. The construction of water schemes to meet the power and agricultural requirements for development have lead to increasing transmission, especially of Schistosoma mansoni. Increasing population and movement have contributed to increased transmission and introduction of schistosomiasis to new areas. Most endemic countries are among the least developed whose health systems face difficulties to provide basic care at the primary health level. Constraints to control include, the lack of political commitment and infrastructure for public health interventions. Another constraint is that available anti-schistosomal drugs are expensive and the cost of individual treatment is a high proportion of the per capita drug budgets. There is need for increased support for schistosomiasis control in the most severely affected countries.
What is the aim of the project?
1.To establish whether or not Schistosomiasis is a burden in the Tono basin. 2.To establish a link between schistosoma and bladder cancer. 3.To identify risk factors of bladder cancer
What techniques and methods are used?
1.Sampling and data collection which would include administration of a structured questionnaire to collect demographic data such as name,age and sex as well as profession(means of livelihood) and symptoms patients present with 2.Clinical examination of patients for signs of schistosomiasis as well as collection of stool samples for lab investigations. 3..Analyzing of the data collected. Inferential quantitative analysis technique would be used by exporting data from the questionnaires (Demographic data,symptoms if present eg heamturia,fever,cough ,malaiseetc,), Laboratory results of schisto ova found in stool routine examination especially in haematobium and mansoni as well as clinical findings found on examination) using Stata software where shared data characteristics are correlated with one another to determine occurrences of known and unknown risk factors 3.Treatment and Evaluation to see the significance of data (by way of common characteristics shared in patients dianosed with bladder cancer and those who present with disease symptoms) collected which would be done by research electronic date capture software
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
1.Review literature 2.Join sample collection exercise: The student will be be part of the recruitment team. This will involve explaining the study to potential participants and obtaining written informed consent then administering the questionnaire. 3.The student would be involved in the clinical examination of such patients. 4.The student would observe the lab analysis of fecal samples, to see if samples are positive for Schistosoma ova 5.Student would be involved in the data entry into Research electronic data capture software and data analysis with Stata software. The data analysis would look at the occurrence of schistosomiasis and bladder cancer and risk factors such as age and occupation using inferential quantitative data analysis. The student will be allowed in the data room, to help with data entry, the analysis and the evaluation of the data.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes,seminars on schistosomiasis;epidemiology ,pathophysiology,management,etc Teachings would be done by the urology specialist. Dr.Nabare Clement-Jafanin
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
