What is the background of the project?
N-docosahexaenoylethanolamine (DHEA) known as synaptamide represents the metabolite of docosahexaeunous acids which is endogenic ligand of cannabinoid receptors and is produced in brain. It has been shown that omega 3 fatty acids derivatives reduce proliferation of head and neck and prostate cancer cells. Based on our hypothesis, synaptamide effects on the specific pathways to silence proliferation activity. Our objective is to investigate above mentioned effect of synaptamide on pancreatic and colon cancer cells.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the research is to determine synaptamide influenced cancer cell’s behavior and alteration of cell parameters.
What techniques and methods are used?
-Literature review -Cell toxicity experiments -Expression analysis of cells (immunoflurescence) -Analysis of cell growth/apoptosis -Analysis of Cell migration/aggressiveness Tools used: Cell culture, cell staining , microscopy, colorimetric experiments, cell behavior monitoring , data analysis.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Students will be asked to review literature to gain knowledge about the project. Prepare presentation about topic and write small review. In parallel Student will be allowed to attend lab experiments and learn methods as an initial step. Afterwards, student is expected to assist PI in different experiments and learn as initial step. afterwards, student is expected to assist PI in different experiments. Student will work with microscopic imaging of cells and make data and statistical analysis, design graphs and figures for presentation.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Student will go through theoretical teaching under the supervision of tutor. This include : preliminary readings and literature review of topic (6 days) , theoretical teaching of research methods in parallel to lab work (6 days), teaching of figure design and data analysis ( 3 days).
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
- The student will prepare a presentation
- The student will prepare an abstract
- The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Student should be diligent, attentive, cooperative, have good communication skills.
