What is the background of the project?
Medical education should be community oriented and competence-based as doctors have to deliver required health care to the community. The education and training of doctors influence the quality of health care of a country. Quality assurance is one of the means to improve and maintain standards of medical education and consequently health care delivery. Medical colleges have to demonstrate quality assurance in order to guarantee that their products are competent enough and as per curricular objectives. Quality assurance involves monitoring of teaching learning environment and assessment methods being practiced at the medical colleges. This study is designed to assess the level of satisfaction and opinion of students about the teaching learning environment and assessment methods of concerned phase. The study results will help policy makers and managers to improve and maintain the standards of medical education in medical colleges of Bangladesh.
What is the aim of the project?
To assess the level of satisfaction and opinion of students about the teaching learning environment of the associated medical college and assessment of the methods of concerned phases.
What techniques and methods are used?
The research is basically a cross sectional descriptive study. The aim of the study is to assess the level of satisfaction and opinion of the students of the concerned medical college about its learning environment. The first step of the study is to prepare a structured anonymous self-administered questionnaire.( step 1) This will be done by Centre for Medical Education (CME) along with the participating student. After that with the help of this questionnaire, Mymensingh Medical college of Bangladesh will be used to collect data from the students of different phases studying here, after taking informed written consent from them.(step 2) The number of students to be approached will be calculated accordingly on the basis of current student studying in the medical college at the time of the study. When the data collection will be completed, it will be analysed with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)version 21.0 and stored accordingly by data entry. (step 3). After all the data collection is done, analysed and stored, a proper report is to be constructed by the researchers under the supervision of the supervising Tutor of the study.(step 4) Summary Step 1: questionnaire preparation Step 2: taking consent of student and data collection Step 3: data entry and analysis Step 4 : report writing (scientific paper)
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Attending orientation sessions: here the participant will learn about the country, medical college and its way of teaching through small sessions which will help the participant later on better understanding of the study. Participation in preparing data collection tool: here the participant will help in making questionnaire for the data collection. Participating in session for participants of the study: in this section the participant will take part in counselling and taking consent from the study group (medical students of different phases) Participating in data collection process: the participant will use the questionnaire to collect data from students of different phases in the assigned medical college. Participating in pre-analysis of data: here participant will sort out the data collected and prepare them for data entry by checking all the questionnaires are filled up accordingly. Participating in data entry: here the participant will do the data entry in spreadsheets and SPSS as well for collection, analysis and storage of collected data. Participating in data analysis: the participant will learn methods of data analysis by using SPSS in this step. Participating in report writing: under supervising tutor the participant will construct a report of the study that has been done.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, there will be theoretical teachings for the student provided by the supervised tutor along with some other associated teachers. At the beginning of the study there will be orientation classes regarding the currents education system for medical students in Bangladesh, along with 2-3 lectures on different aspects of research and its methodology. In the end there will be seminars where the participants will have to present their study project in front of a group of teachers associated with the study, that will groove up the student in study presentation skills.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation - The student will prepare a scientific report - No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
English language speaking (Mandatory) and computer competency in MS Word, SPSS (not mandatory) Subjects passed: Higher Secondary subjects
