Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
In 2009, the Aragon Workers' Health Study (AWHS) was launched as a result of the collaboration agreement between the Institute of Health Sciences of the Government of Aragon, the National Cardiovascular Research Center of the Carlos III Health Institute of the Government of Spain and the factory General Motors Spain of Zaragoza. The AWHS is a cohort study, observational and longitudinal, whose main objective is to know the genetic determinants and the environment and lifestyles that condition the appearance of different cardiovascular risk factors in certain individuals and the subsequent evolution towards subclinical atherosclerotic disease or clinic in some of them. A multidisciplinary research infrastructure was prepared to collect clinical data from voluntary annual occupational health medicine reviews of its workers and to collect blood and urine samples for multiple clinical analyzes, DNA extraction and aliquot and storage of their samples. blood and urine, completely anonymously, in the Biobank of Aragon. The cohort is made up of 5680 workers. A total of 2900 volunteers, every three years, are given a special visit to the Cardiovascular Prevention Research Unit for the application of different lifestyle and psychological questionnaires and performed ECG, 3DHD vascular ultrasound of the carotid and femoral arteries and coronary CT. All procedures and protocols are certified in the ISO-9008 quality standard.
What is the aim of the project?
To know the genetic determinants and the environment and lifestyles that condition the appearance of different cardiovascular risk factors in certain individuals and the subsequent evolution towards subclinical atherosclerotic disease or clinic in some of them.
What techniques and methods are used?
Firstly we selected the study population which are 5680 workers of some of the main factories in Zaragoza. Secondly we begin collecting data. To all the workers in the study we do Diet and physical exercise questionnaires, blood analysis and 3D-HD-ultrasound vascular images. Thirdly, we repeat the test 10 years later as it is a cohort study Lastly, we analise the results and the variations to know the effect of genetic, environmental determinants and lifestyles.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will collaborate in the citation and follow-up of the workers in our follow-up unit, attending them in the four blocks of obtaining data: extraction of blood samples and their processing and management in the biobank, application of questionnaires on lifestyles (diet , exercise, sleep and stress), obtaining biometric data (weight, height, PCA, blood pressure and ECG), and finally the 3D-HD vascular image of the carotid, aorta and femoral arteries. Support and learn the management of large medical databases, both laboratory and clinical.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster - The student will prepare a presentation - The student will prepare a scientific report - The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication - The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
None specific skills
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
