What is the background of the project?
There is a lack of data regarding the epidemiology of systemic vasculitis in Republic of Moldova, and even in the Eastern Europe. The project implies to build from scratch a systemic vasculitis national registry, in which all patients will be recorded. The registry will allow to describe the epidemiology of various systemic vasculitis, evaluate present and potential functional and severity scales (e.g. BVAS, PVAS, VDI, Five-Factor Score, DEI, EQ-5D etc.) assess their risk factors as well as plan following years financial budget for the diagnosis and management of these patients.
What is the aim of the project?
Build an online database of patients with systemic vasculitis, using various frameworks and software. Interpretation of the collected data.
What techniques and methods are used?
The research project will begin with creating an online database using the framework Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL. The student must have basic programming skills. After the database is build, patients with systemic vasculitis hospitalized at two rheumatological departments from the country (Republican Clinical Hospital and St. Trinity Municipal Hospital) will be recorded. The examiners will have to do a thorough physical examination, documenting general and specific results (such as weight, height, presence or absence of purpura etc.). The students will follow a predefined form. The form will have to be introduced in the online database. Further visits to the doctor are also going to be recorded in the database. As enough data is collected, data interpretation will be performed, to assess the incidence, prevalence, evolution, complications, risk factors and other epidemiological information regarding vasculitis. The statistical analysis and data interpretation will be accomplished using software such as IBM SPSS. However, if the budget will allow, the researchers will built powerful algorithms for an in-depth data analysis using R programming language.

What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Collecting data according to a standardized questionnaire; Performing physical examination of the following systems: pulmonary, cardiac, gastrointestinal, renal, osteo-muscular, nervous. Data entry in the electronic vasculitis registry of the clinical and laboratory results; Modify the database according the needs of the registry, using skills in front end and back end programming.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The student will be handed by the tutor upon arrival a list of textbooks, lectures and courses from which one can study individually the theoretical material.
