What is the background of the project?
The frequency of atrial septal defects is 5-10% as a single anomaly of all congenital heart defect (CHD), as a part of other anomalies - 30-50%, we’re seeing those defects twice more often in female than in male. In 1500 children born alive there’s 1 with atrial septal defect. For now one of the best method of controlling the effectiveness of operative treatment is echocardiography, which is the best diagnostic method before treatment as well.
What is the aim of the project?
Compare the effectiveness of different surgical treatments and identify their advantages in various localizations of atrial septal defect as well.
What techniques and methods are used?
Clinical methods: taking an anamnesis of patients Laboratory methods: blood samples - the level of creatine phosphokinase, creatine kinase, the proteins troponin I and troponin T as the measures of heart damage; Urine tests: β2-micro globulin, creatinine samples as the indicator of severity congenital heart disease; Instrumental methods: echocardiography (diameter of defect, hemodynamics) - electrocardiography (waves, intervals), angiography (vascular directions and amount of blood flow in region of defect); Statistical method: adding data in excel tabs and analyzing how that data correlated with frequency and severity of congenital heart defect.
What is the role of the student?

What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will be able to help during physical examinations of patients, perform an echocardiography for getting such parameters as the diameter of defect and hemodynamics; perform an electrocardiography independently, help during the performing of angiography procedure, analyze the results of laboratory instrumental tests After combining and elaboration of the received data in tables, student will analyze it and get to correlate it to severity and frequency of appearance congenital heart disease.

Skills of performing an echocardiography, electrocardiography. Subjects passed: Pediatric.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
All manipulations must be done under tutor’s supervision.
