What is the background of the project?
Functional dyspepsia (DF) is a pathology that includes chronic and recurrent disorders of the upper digestive tract and that has no organic origin. Its prevalence worldwide varies between 11% to 29.2%. Medical students are a population susceptible to suffer from this disorder, at a university in Brasilia a prevalence of 25% was found. However, the results of these studies can not be extrapolated to our environment. Despite this, in Peru there have been no studies to determine prevalence or associated factors of DF. For this reason, the objective of this study is to determine the factors associated with functional dyspepsia in undergraduate medical students.
What is the aim of the project?
Determine the factors associated with functional dyspepsia in undergraduate students of human medicine.
What techniques and methods are used?
An analytical cross-sectional study will be carried out, applying a closed survey in a single period of time to all the participants, analyzing later the association between the variables.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Phases: This study will consist of six fundamental phases. A. Elaboration of the project In which will include the bibliographical revision, writing of the project and obtaining the sample size. B. Obtaining the institutional permit and approval by the Ethics Committee: It will be presented to the academic undergraduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad del Pacífico to obtain the permission of the institution for the application of the surveys to the undergraduate students. C. Application of the instruments • Delegates will be located by academic semester of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad del Pacífico. • Coordinate with the delegate of each course to set dates for the application of the survey. • The application of the survey will be carried out by the exchange student and a co-author of the study who will have a survey guide to answer any questions that may arise from the participants (Annex 3). D. Processing and analysis of data A database will be created in the STATA 11.0 software. Subsequently, the descriptive and inferential statistical analysis will be carried out. E. Writing final report With bibliography according to Vancouver standards. F. Presentation of results It will be presented to an indexed journal for publication. Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The exchange student will receive basic training in research methodology, including topics such as writing, research ethics, basic statistics and introduction to scientific publications.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
- The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
- The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
None
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
