Type of Research Project
- Global Action Project (GAP)
What is the background of the project?
The introduction of highly active antirretroviral therapy (HAART) changed the course of HIV infections, AIDS started to be considered a chronic disease. High proportion of patients treated with HAART present with metabolic disorders (dyslipidemia, insulin resistance) and physiological alterations (lipodystrophy and lipoatrophy), as well as increased risk of cardiovascular disease (coronary artery disease and stroke). The aim of this study is to evaluate the lipid profiles, verify the cardiovascular risk and survival of HIV/AIDS patients treated with HAART in the south of Brazil. Cohort epidemiological retrospective study for the verification of cardiovascular risk factors. A sum of 4.000 medical records from patients consulted in the “Serviço de Atenção Especializada de Ponta Grossa, Paraná” between 2002 and 2014 will be reviewed.
What is the aim of the project?
Learning in planning of research programs Learning in gathering of fieldwork data Elaboration and appliance of research instruments Knowledge in Public Health, Epidemiology, and the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) Participation in publishing scientific articles Improvement in medical patient relationship Contact to the population, it’s necessities, difficulties and challenges.
What techniques and methods are used?
The student will perform the Verification and gathering of data in medical records through the charts available in each health service where the present research will take place. Appliance of research instruments, e.g. CEATHIV - of the Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Questionnaire, Brazilian adaptation. The student should collect the data and place them in questionnaires through the collection in basic attention units. Thus, it is necessary for the student to make a previous reading about the functioning of the basic care networks and how the service works where the research will be carried out. In addition, it is important that the student perform the readings of the articles proposed to better perform the research in the proposed topics of Public Health.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
It will be expected from the incoming: To participate in study groups, To join fieldwork by collecting data from patients in “Unidades Básicas de Saúde” (Basic Health Units) To present and attend to seminars in the themes of Public Health, “Saúde da Família” Program (Family Health Programa), Epidemiology, To attend to classes of Public Health, Health Practices and Epidemiology at UEPG To apply questionnaires (e.g. CEATHIV - of the Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Questionnaire, Brazilian adaptation) To analyse, process and interpret data
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
To read articles involving the thematic of the research, such as those mentioned above and possibly other ones To read articles involving public health, epidemiology, Brazilian Health System (SUS) and Family Health Program (Programa Saúde da Familia) .
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
- The student will prepare a presentation
- The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
To apply questionnaires (e.g. CEATHIV - of the Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Questionnaire, Brazilian adaptation) To analyze, process and interpret data, following the appliance of questionnaires To accompany and participate in medical consults in the Public Health System Location: Centro Municipal de Especialidades ( Municipal Center of Medical Specialties) Serviço de Atenção Especializada (Service of Specialized Attention)
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
