- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
According to the World Health Organization, the syphilis during pregnancy is one million annually wourlwide, with more than 300,000 fetal and neonatal deaths, also driving to risk of premature death more than 200,000 children. Syphilis in pregnancy is a serious public health problem in Brazil, responsible for high rates of intrauterine morbidity and mortality and maternal and perinatal complications. For this reason, since 2005 it has been considered a compulsory notification disease, for epidemiological surveillance purposes. For example, whereas in 2010 the rate was 3.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in 2016 this number almost quadrupled, with a rate of 12.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. However, there is still underreporting of the cases, reflecting a deficiency at the quality of prenatal care and delivery services.
What is the aim of the project?
Analyze the epidemiological and demographic profile of the puerperae diagnosed with syphilis assisted in the joint accommodation of maternity hospitals at Cuiabá - MT.
What techniques and methods are used?
This is about a retrospective descriptive study with a quantitative approach, through review at a database of puerperal patients hospitalized at Hospital located in the city of Cuiabá, during the period from january 2017 to december of 2019. Through search of medical records, all the carriers of syphilis diagnosed during pregnancy, considered through the affirmation of the puerpera and / or confirmation in their prenatal card, will be selected, however, without distinguishing between pregnant women who have received or not treatment. In order to characterize the profile of this population, the following variables will be chosen: number of prenatal consultations; family income divided into classes from A to E, being class E up to R$1,254.00, class D from R$1,255.00 to 2,004.00, class C from R$2,005.00 to 8,640.00, class B of R$8,641.00 to11,261.00 and class A R$11,261.00; schooling of the puerperium, subdivided into, higher education, complete or incomplete secondary school; 1st grade complete or incomplete; race: black, brown, white or other; age groups grouped in children under 15, 15 to 19, 20 to 29 and 30 to 39 years. For statistical calculation of this research will be used the “t student” test method and the Excel program to tabulation and organization of research data.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student should accomplish these two stages of the project: Step 1: Monitor and assist in the configuration of the sample number and its feasibility in the Epidemiological Surveillance sector of the hospital, looking for the number of cases of syphilis / congenital syphilis in the period from January 2017 to December 2019. In addition to assisting in the collection of information with a questionnaire elaborated from the syphilis record in pregnant women and a record of congenital syphilis, both done by SINAN (National System of Notification Diseases). Step 2: Follow up and help in the analysis of the information collected and prepare the final report of the research. Considering the listed variables, the data will have simple tabulation and will be classified for creationof the database in Microsoft Office Excel 2007. Your presentation will be through distribution tables and frequencies.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The student should participate at regular scientific meeting; after a while present the results to the colleagues of the medical school and invited professors; to present the work at scientific event.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Bring the own lab coat and stethoscope. Also, to be up to date with the main vaccines of the immunization scheme in Brazil.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
