[Monastir]Treatment options for third ventricular colloid cysts: comparison of open microsurgical versus endoscopic resection.
Tunisia (ASSOCIA-MED) - University of Monastir/Faculty of Medecine of Monastir, Monastir
Neurosrugery Department Fattouma Bourguiba Hospital Monastir , Avenue Farhat HACHED Monastir 5040
Atef ben Nsir
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Colloid cyst is a tumor containing gelatinous material in the brain. It is almost always found just posterior to the foramen of Monro in the anterior aspect of the third ventricle, originating from the roof of the ventricle. It represents a very rare intracranial lesion And accounting for approximately 0,5% of all intracranial lesions. Because colloid cysts are so rare, there is very little information about them, which puts us in an urgent case to start research and find out the best treatment procedure. We’ve created a colloid cyst registry, which allows us to assemble comprehensive data on all patients . So Cyst removal when symptomatic can be achieved either with open microsurgical approach or with endoscopic approach
What is the aim of the project?
Compare the two surgical techniques in terms of surgery time, surgical complications, complete cyst removal and recurrence
What techniques and methods are used?
A nationwide database will be required Clinical, radiological, surgical and follow up details will be investigated. In both methodes : open microsurgery and endoscopy restriction suregery. -Surgery observation / surgical minute writing -Patient Follow up during recovery -Make a statistical analysis comparing both results by working essentially on SPSS, which is a software used for this matter.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student is expected to do a literature review on different Statistical analysis. He will in a first step compare the surgical techniques based on the Tunisian nationwide Study Then Compare Results with similar studies in the literature Then Participate in the creation of a therapeutic decision algorithm Based on conclusions. He will attend the surgical treatment to observe and learn both methodes , observe the results and take notes , Finally engage in the statistical and clinical analysis of the data.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
YES , Lectures
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Only students who had lectures in neurosurgery are accepted. Students can use literature suggested by their own faculty on topic of neurosurgery Subjects passed: Neurology & Neurosurgery Previous experience with: research studies
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months) - Dental medicine students (IADS members)
