Diagnostic and therapeutic pathway of pigmented lesions in order to do an earlier diagnosis of melanoma with the use of dermoscopy
Universita degli Studi di Parma
Clinica Dermatologica Università di Parma Via Gramsci 14 Parma 43126
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Pigmented lesions include mostly benign lesions. Few of them are melanomas. Melanomas is one of the most aggressive and frequent neoplasms. The surgical excision at an early stage of melanoma is related to a better survival. Dermoscopy is now a simple technique for an early diagnosis of melanoma. Dermoscopy is a normal and frequent tool used daily by dermatologists in Italy not only for differential diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions. Up to now and in several countries most of the pigmented lesions are surgical excised as a medical prevention but the social cost of this procedure is high. Follow up and early diagnosis of melanoma with a regular use of dermoscopy is economical convenient and better accepted by the patients.
What is the aim of the project?
To understand if dermoscopy is useful for early diagnosis melanomas and a better tool for prevention respect to surgical excision of clinical atypic nevi
What techniques and methods are used?
To compare an outpatient clinic where all pigmented lesions are excised if any doctor give this indication versus a preclinical evaluation using dermoscopy . Data clinical files where used in order to get these informations. Data were compared between pigmented lesions exised with or withour a previous dermoscopy evaluation
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
To create a pathway for the patient including a clinical evaluation, a dermoscopic evaluation and then a follow-up or surgical excision. Therefore the students will be able to understand better the physiopathology of the disease and the clinical treatment most useful to prevent complications. Finally the student will evaluat a cut-cost comparing the data with or without a preclinical evaluation with dermoscopy
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes; the student will read some literature and then will see the practical part of the project including patients and finally the results of the aim of the study
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster - The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Subject passed: dermatologu
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Privacy of the patients has to be fully respected
Type of students accepted
