Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) isolation and characterization
Spain (IFMSA Spain) - University of Granada, Granada
Departamento de Farmacología,
Maria Pilar Utrilla Navarro
Julio Juan Galvez Peralta
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
The aim of the project is to isolate mesenchymal stem cells (MSC from rejections from patients with inflammatory bowel disease or a colon tumor. Once the cells has been isolated, they are cultured in specific conditions in order to have enough cell mass for the experiments that come downstream. Then, this cells are characterized and different phenotypical features – typical of MSC – are assessed. With regard to this, different experiments are carried out – flow cytometry, cellular differentiation, exosome isolation, etc.
What is the aim of the project?
The purpose is to completely characterize the phenotype of MSC from the colon
What techniques and methods are used?
- Cell isolation - Cell culture - Flow cytometry
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student is expected to observe all the procedures carried out with colonic human samples, cell isolation and culture and phenotype characterization of the cells. Once the student shows a proper knowledge of the techniques, they could help with the lab work under supervision. They could join too the other lab projects and learn another techniques that are performed usually in our laboratory like RNA isolation, gene quantification by RT-qPCR and histological techniques.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, in case they are requested by the student
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
To have knowledge about molecular biology, working confidently within a group, critical thinking and scientific attitude.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
The results obtained in the different experiments are intellectual property of the University of Granada and therefore confidential
Type of students accepted
