What is the background of the project?
Regeneration is a complex process of healing and tissue growth, which involves different biological elements. Different strategies have been pursued, among them the noncoherent light (light-emitting diodes, LED) in the red spectrum is an innovative approach. In dermatological field, experimental studies on its regenerative effect starts about ten years ago with encouraging results. Nevertheless, the biological effects described in Literature are not always in agreement and the exact mechanism of its action should be elucidated better.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to elucidate the effects and the mechanisms of action of red LED light in different human cell lines.
What techniques and methods are used?
The cells will be cultured in vitro and undergo to different treatments. The cells will be analyzed with the following techniques and methods: Human Cell culture, immunohistochemistry, morphological staining, MTT assay, ELISA assay, Western Blotting. The results obtained will be analyzed using also digital approaches.
What is the role of the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will have to understand the aim of the project reading scientific articles from principal scientific databases. After, the student will have to take part in the laboratory experiments, acquiring the cell culture techniques and the methods to analyze the cell response to different treatments. Finally, the student will have to analyze the obtained results interpreting the data.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The student will have to read scientific articles provided by the Tutor. Moreover, under supervision, the student will have to search in literature the last key articles on the topic of the project. The student will have to read and discuss them with the Tutor.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster - The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Student with biological laboratory experience will be advantaged to perform all the tasks expected. Nevertheless, also student with no laboratory experience could participate.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Some chemical substances cannot be used by the students.

This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months) - Pre-Medical students from the American-British system - Students in biomedical fields
