What is the background of the project?
Inflammation is a normal hospice response to infectious agents. Sepsis is characterized by excessive production of inflammatory mediators and excessive activation of inflammatory cells, resulting in metabolic anarchy in which "the organism itself can not control itself." The main consequence of this inflammatory response is the involvement of many organs and the evolution of the shock syndrome for multiple organ failure syndrome, which is accompanied by high mortality. To be effective, pharmacological therapy in sepsis should mimic and compensate for the organism's natural defense, in order to block the inflammatory response as soon as possible. This project intends to analyze the sepsis disease. This search aims to study the evaluation of biomarkers and understanding of the immunological mechanisms involved on sepsis, besides the analyses of the effects on the central neurological system and cognitive activities. Clinical methods and research will be used to aid in the best prognosis in animal models. There will be training with a research and support group through the local University.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to understand better the mechanisms involved in sepsis.
What techniques and methods are used?
This will analyze the evaluation of survival, neurological evaluation, measurement of oxidative damage to lipids, measurement of oxidative damage in proteins, Total protein dosage, the enzyme´s activity Superoxide dismutase, Enzyme activity Catalase.There will be a first step to verify the products to be measured in the laboratory, a second stage for testing and experimentation of the variables and finally the analysis of the results of the research. For the statistical analysis of the project will be used the chi square test that has as basic principle of this method is to compare proportions, that is, possible differences between the frequencies observed and expected for a certain event.
What is the role of the student?

What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will help in the sepsis process in laboratory rats. Not only in the part of the anesthesia, but also in the surgery and dosage of medicines, carefully observing the previously calculated values for the effective control of the research results, thus avoiding the occurrence of bias in the construction process of the present research project. The student will do the follow-up of laboratory rats after induction of sepsis. The student will analyze the neurological and laboratory evaluation of rats induced sepsis analyzing correctly each data of the research and storing them for the later computation of the same ones and correct analysis of the results. The student will study all the mechanisms of sepsis and search for new solutions in progress with sepsis. So, the exchange student will learn all steps about the process of sepsis until analysis of results and the student will later report on his exchange research and his learning from this experience at a university different from his own University
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, the articles will be send to the student before the exchange starts.The student will watch seminars.Seminars consist of courses specific to the students who has some role in the laboratories (the master, PhD, for example), and the student can join the ones organized by his/her tutor. No theorical subject is needed to be previously read by the student.

What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
-The exchange students participating in this project should be a student who has knowledge about Cell biology, Biochemistry and Physiology and has skills for research laboratory work. Subjects passed: Surgical technique
