What is the background of the project?
Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is an inherited uncommon heart disease, where sudden cardiac death in young seemingly healthy persons may be the first symptom. ARVC is probably more common than previously known, due to diagnostic difficulty. Patients are referred to us from hospitals and primary care centers in the southeast of Sweden for investigation and follow-up of ARVC. Since 1990 ́s, fifty patients with ARVC diagnosis and more than 120 relatives are followed up in Linköping. The diagnosis of the disease is based on a combination of different criteria including ECG, echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the occurrence of arrhythmia a well as family history of sudden cardiac death or malignant arrhythmia. The visualization of the right ventricle (RV), the predominantly affected part in ARVC is challenging. The assessment of RV function and the progress of the disease over years have some limitations due to RV anatomy and function. Recent reports have documented that the right atrial (RA) size and function is nearly related to the RV function and could detect small changes in RV function in patients with right heat diseases.
What is the aim of the project?
In this project we will measure the right atrial size and function and relate this to the right ventricular function in patients with ARVC. The aim is to analyze if RA size and function could be an additional parameter to detect small RV function abnormalities
What techniques and methods are used?
The method used is echocardiography. The measurement will be performed on echocardiography images recorded in patients with ARVC. Measurements using distance and area assessment of the RA will be performed. We are planning to use T-test to compare continuous variables. We will use univariate regressions analysis to analyse the relation between artrial dilatation and progress in parameters for right ventricle function (valve plane movement and tissue-Doppler).
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will be supervised in downloading the echocardiography images. After a theoretical moment about the echo images, the different part of the heart and the way the measurements should be done, the student will have the opportunity to measure different parameters under supervision and collect the data. With the supervisor, the analysis of the data and statistics will be performed.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
A theoretical information about the circulation and cardiac function is necessary. More theoretical information about the disease, the role of echocardiography in the diagnostic will be teached when the student is here.
