What is the background of the project?
Today, the survival rate of premature infants, requiring prolonged intubation, and infants with congenital malformations of the larynx increases. Therefore, the number of children with a tracheostomy also increases. The theme quality of life of the children with a tracheostomy remains investigated poorly in medicine. Evaluation quality of life is very important for observation of the patient condition in time and for comparative assessment patients’ condition of different age groups. Formulation of criterions for evaluation of quality of life of patients with a tracheostomy will help to assess the effectiveness of treatment and to develop the rehabilitation program.
What is the aim of the project?
The aims of the project: 1. To develop the concept for measuring of the life quality of the patients with a tracheostomy; 2. To assess the impact of a tracheostomy on a patient's life quality; 3. To determine the relation between the life quality and treatment effectiveness; 4. To assess the psychological status of the children’s mothers ; 5. To develop the stages of rehabilitation of the patients, to develop measures to improve the quality of life.
What techniques and methods are used?
The student will work with patients and their parents to collect anamnestic data, the study includes processing of statistical data and analysis of the results. The technique of tracheostomy will be used. The student will learn methods of medical attention and care for tracheostomy. Analysis of data to develop the stages of rehabilitation of the patients.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student is expected to perform following manipulations under supervision: - to make questionnaire survey of children and their mothers according to the international protocol of evaluation of «QOL»( Quality of Life); - to make a review of the literature; -to put a tracheostomy - to know how to implement medical attention and care for it - to write a short report about his/her results and achievements
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Themes of lectures: 1. Pediatric Laryngotracheal Stenosis 2. Сongenital Laryngeal Malformations 3. Bilateral and Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis 4. What is the Quality of Life? 5. Тhe Clinical Significance of Quality of Life Studies.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation - The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Data collection, statistical analysis, communication with the patient.
