The effect of 5-FU on colonic mucosal inflammation and contractility in mice model
Korea (KMSA) - Wonkwang university, North Jeolla province
Department of Physiology
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
5-FU is a commonly used drug for the treatment of malignant cancer. However, around 80% of patients undergoing 5-FU treatment suffer from gastrointestinal mucositis. In contrast to above result, there was a report that 5-FU alternatives dextran sodium sulfate-induced acute colitis.
What is the aim of the project?
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 5-FU on colonic(mucosal) inflammation and the changes of colonic contractility.
What techniques and methods are used?
We will make the colitis model and measure the changes of colonic contractility through the organ bath system and demonstrate the changes of colonic mucosa or muscle layer through immunohistochemistry and Western blot.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
- The student will mainly observe
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
First of all, student should learn how to manage animals (rat, mice and etc.). Then students can participate and conduct to measure the contractility through organ bath system.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
For understanding the experienced design, short lectures or seminars can be conducted in the lab or seminar room.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Subjects passed : Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Students should submit the certificate of vaccination ( including tetanus ). If it is possible, students are recommended to take institutional Review Board class.
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students
- The changes of colonic contractility in response to stress ( or drugs such as 5-FU; prokinetics and etc.) in rats ( or mice ).
