What is the background of the project?
Gastric cancer: Number of New Cases and Deaths per 100,000: The number of new cases of stomach cancer was 7.3 per 100,000 men and women per year. The number of deaths was 3.2 per 100,000 men and women per year. These rates are age-adjusted and based on 2010-2014 cases and deaths. Lifetime Risk of Developing gastric Cancer: Approximately 0.8 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with stomach cancer at some point during their lifetime, based on 2012-2014 data. Treatment of gastric cancer for today consists of drug treatments and surgical procedure. More often patients with up to stage T3 (TNM classification, 7th edition) received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Complex treatment provide better result than surgery or chemotherapy alone. The main question is Do we need neoadjuvant chemotherapy for not advanced tumors, will it improved long term results? Laparoscopic peritoneal washing provides material for cytology morphological examination. All patients with T1, T2 and T3 stages of gastric cancer undergo abdominal washing.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is optimize treatment strategy for patients with gastric cancer.
What techniques and methods are used?
The study includes few stages. The first clinical and surgical activities, secondly statistical activities. Сlinical methods: publications review, observation of abdominal ultrasound examination & computed tomography, participation on discussions on strategy of treatment. Assistance and/or observation in video-laparoscopic pancreatojejunostomy. Statistical methods: Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon Test using StatSoft STATISTICA v6.0
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Сlinical methods: publications review, observation of abdominal ultrasound examination & computed tomography, participation on discussions on strategy of treatment. Assistance and/or observation in video-laparoscopic pancreatojejunostomy. Student could do work in dry lab without supervision. Statistical methods: Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon Test using StatSoft STATISTICA v6.0
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Introductions seminars will be provided
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
- The student will prepare an abstract
- The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Students have to provide good theoretical background in anatomy and at least elementary skills in surgery. Written English should be of high level, project will be accompanied by workbook maintenance. Also student has to know our scientific topic about minimally invasive surgery. Student allowed perform any manipulation with patient or his/her examination’s data only under supervision of tutor. After the exchange student will make a scientific report, poster or abstract. Subjects passed: anatomy, general surgery Previous experience with: some experience of scientific working in medicine Student cannot use any of the data he / she worked with during the research exchange in Moscow Clinical Scientific Center. Student will be among authors panel for abstract publication. Student will get reference for his publication. Student must have a white coat, overshoes, good mood
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
