What is the background of the project?
The present coordinated project aims to study the impact of the above-mentioned variations (Team A) in neuropsychological performance, functional outcome (Team B) and neuroanatomic patterns (Team C) in a sample of 300 bipolar disorders patients and 300 healthy controls matched by age, gender and level of education. Each centre will enroll the same amount of patients and healthy controls. We (Team A) will analyze, under a case-control design, all DNA samples for genetic variants at several genes, DDR1 and other important myelination receptors. Moreover we will measure levels of DDR1 gene methylation to study its possible association with self-reported child maltreatment. The aims of the project are the following. 1. Comparison of DDR1 rs1264323 and rs2267641 genotype frequencies between bipolar disease patients and healthy controls in a sample from the Spanish National Research Network on Mental Health (CIBERSAM). This large sample (N=3,000 patients and 3,000 healthy controls) will be used in addition to the project sample (N=300 patients and 300 healthy controls). 2. Comparison of DDR1 methylation patterns in peripheral blood cells DNA between bipolar disorder patients and healthy controls. 3. Measurement the impact of childhood trauma experiences measured with the Child Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) on peripheral blood cells methylation and comparison between bipolar disorder patients and healthy controls. Tasks on his/her own:read scientific papers, read protocols regarding the project, preparing data bases. Tasks under supervision: search bibliography, isolation of DNA, managment of DNA samples, plating DNA to be statistical analyses.
