What is the background of the project?
This project is within our research line about isolation and biochemical identification of molecules with biotechnological interest from microorganisms of the Atacama Desert. Our laboratory works with cyanobacteria and we are interested in studying antioxidants properties of biomolecules from cyanobacteria. We have one strain that produce high content of exopolysaccharides in laboratory conditions and we would like to determinate antioxidants properties of sugars and pigments for potential biotechnological purposes. aim: To study antioxidants properties of exopolysacharides Techniques: Classicals methods to determinate antioxidant properties based on chemical reactions, for example, FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid radical cation.
What is the aim of the project?
To study antioxidants properties of exopolysacharides.
What techniques and methods are used?
Classicals methods to determinate antioxidant properties based on chemical reactions, for example, FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) and ABTS (2,2'-azino- bis(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulphonic acid radical cation.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student has to be done under supervision the following tasks: -To prepare culture medium for cyanobacteria. -To cultivate cyanobacteria under laboratory conditions. -To purify exopolysaccharides. - To apply standard protocols for the determination of antioxidant properties of exopolysaccharides.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
There will be preliminary readings about cianobacteria and exopolysaccharides.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
- The student’s name will be mentioned in a future publication
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Responsability ans dedication.Previous experience with: solution preparation, to calculate concentrations.
