Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Colchicine is a medication extracted from the Colchicum autumnale plant. It is a well-known medication already used by thousands of patients around the world to treat inflammatory diseases, such as gout and familial Mediterranean fever. This research project is an international multicenter prospective randomized double-blind trial initiated by Montreal Heart Institute (CANADA) to evaluate whether long-term treatment with COLCHICINE reduces rates of cardiovascular events in patients suffering from myocardial infarction.
What is the aim of the project?
To study the effect of COLCHICINE in patients suffering from myocardial infarction on the incidence of cardiovascular events.
What techniques and methods are used?
COLCOT is a worldwide phase 3 clinical trial. Participants will be randomly assigned either to the group receiving colchicine or to the group receiving an identical product in appearance but that does not contain the active ingredient (placebo). This will allow evaluating whether it is preferable to use colchicine or not. In addition, neither the clinical research team nor the participants will know to which treatment they were assigned. Study includes: - Reporting information on paper - Using electronic reports: CRF (Cardiovascular Research Foundation) http://www.crf.org/
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student should be Identifying the potential candidates, candidates that are eligible to be included in the registry : • Be 18 years of age, or older • Have suffered a myocardial infarction in the past 30 days • Not having undergone a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) in the past 3 years • Not suffering of an anti-inflammatory disease of the intestine (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis) or chronic diarrhea  • Not currently taking colchicine for another indication.  Then, the student will be collecting data on paper and he will also be assisting in entering the data.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, there will be oral presentations on the project ,methodology aims and potential difficulties in collecting data.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
no
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
