Effect of melatonin in breast cancer cells.
Brazil (IFMSA-Brazil) - Faculdade de Medicina de Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Sao Jose do Rio Preto
Molecular Biology Departament
Debora Ap. Pires de Campos Zuccari
English, Spanish and Portuguese
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
There is some evidence to suggest that Melatonin, the principal hormone secreted by the pineal gland, influences neoplastic growth. It may play a role important in tumor suppression and has shown antiangiogenic, pro-apoptotic and antimetastatic effects. Currently, positive results were obtained regarding inhibition of angiogenesis by Hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1alfa) and Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
What is the aim of the project?
Evaluate the effect of melatonin on molecular markers in metastasis, angiogenesis, apoptosis and proliferation of breast cancer cells.
What techniques and methods are used?
Cells culture, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, assay, Real time PCR, MTT assay, Western blotting, in vivo assay.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student follow pos-graduate students and laboratory techniques, such as cell culture, MTT assay, Real time PCR (polymerase chain reaction), Western blotting, immunohistochemistry. In addition, the student will learn biosafety standards. Attend mutings.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
During the exchange, the student will be given articles and complementary readings on the subject. The material will be referring to the topic addressed during a stage that the project is in.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Knowledge about pratical skill in laboratory techniques in basic research.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
