Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are slight structural aberrations that are believed to be associated with abnormal neurodevelopment. Studies of schizophrenia patients show that these patients score higher in MPAs than normal controls. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that MPAs might reflect extragenetic stressful events and present total MPA score as a reliable index in distinguishing between schizophrenia patients and normal controls. The aim of the project is to find connection between minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and abnormal neurodevelopment leading to schizophrenia Creating a control group of patients A laser scan will be used for creating 3D models of the brain structures Collecting the results and creating a database Analyzing the results
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to find connection between minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and abnormal neurodevelopment leading to schizophrenia
What techniques and methods are used?
Creating a control group of patients A laser scan will be used for creating 3D models of the brain structures Collecting the results and creating a database Analyzing the results
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student can observe the imaging process. Afterwards he/she will help in establishing a database and analyzing the results
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Mainly practical exercises
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Knowledge about the anatomy of the brain. General knowledge of schizophrenia
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Pre-Medical students from the American-British system
