What is the background of the project?
Infertility is a pubic health problem that affects 10% of couples in Portugal. Assisted Reproductive Technologies are the last step in infertility treatment, being responsible for 2,5% of the newborns in Portugal. Some of the infertile couples need to have access to donor gametes in order to achieve success in infertility treatment. The gamete donation program that is being set up in Coimbra will receive voluntary male and female donors and cryopreserve their gametes for future use.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to develop a successful gamete donation program
What techniques and methods are used?
Medical and Psychological consultations of donor candidates, sperm analysis and cryopreservation, ovarian stimulation and oocyte recovery and cryopreservation.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will always work under medical supervision. He will attend consultations of donor candidates, he will perform sperm analysis and cryopreservation, ovarian stimulation and oocyte recovery and cryopreservation. The student will be asked to perform a revision of published articles on the subject. The revision will be used to assess best practices for setting up a gamete cryopreservation program.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The student will be given a brief introduction to the subject.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?

What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Subject passed: Gynecology. Knowledge of basic reproductive physiology and of how to perform a bibliography search
