Pre-leukemie chromosome aberrations in Fanconi anemia cells: prognostic implications
Portugal (PorMSIC) . Univesity of Porto - Biomedical Sciences Institute Abel Salazar, Porto
Laboratory of Cytogenetic, ICBAS, UP.
Prof. Beatriz Porto
Prof. Beatriz Porto
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Fanconi anemia (FA) is a serve inhepited bone marrow pilure syndrome. Chromosome aberrations (CA) in FA cells may have important prognostic implications, since patients can be classified as having myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML) development, defending on the specific type and frequency of those CA.
What is the aim of the project?
To perform cytogenetic evaluation in bone marrow/peripheral blood of FA patient and to correlate the different types of CA eventually observed with progression of disease;
What techniques and methods are used?
Lymphocyte/ bone marrow cultures and cell harvest; -Microscopic identification of chromosome instability for FA diagnosis; -Microscopic identification of chromosome abnormalities associated to MDS and AML;
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
To perform on hisler own: identification of chromosome instability for FA diagnosis; Karyotypina; Identification of chromosome aberrations associated with MDS or AML to be done under supervision: bone marrow/peripheral blood cultures and cell harvest.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, preliminary readings
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students
- Mehta; PA; etal; cancer genetic cytogenetic (2010); 203 -180 - 186
