Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Bacteria develop several resistance mechanisms against antimicrobial agents and antibiotic resistance that is present among some bacteria creates an issue and is becoming one of the major challenges for the human population. In this project we are interested in researching the effect of several natural compounds that might have antimicrobial activities, but we are also investigating whether a synergic activity with known antibiotics or candidate compounds derived from essential oils extracted from plants are present or not. The aim of this project is to reduce the antimicrobial resistance incidence by searching for new natural compounds, some plant extractions which will synergize with antibiotics. Dish Diffusion, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Checkerboard assays, Time- Kill assays.
What is the aim of the project?
What techniques and methods are used?
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
To have knowledge and a certain experience with very basic microbiology lab tests such as bacterial culture or micropipetting. Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed? X Subjects passed: Microbiology X Previous experience with: Bacterial culture, micropipetting.Tutor would be please if I could have a conference call with the student. He/She would have the opportunity to ask Tutor anything regarding the projects and personal matters.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
