What is the background of the project?
Students should have interests in computer programming and ultrasound imaging physics. Ultrasound image of a soft tissue is based on speckle formed from ultrasound backscattering, which is dependent on the tissue properties. In the project, students will learn to analyze speckle pattern in an ultrasound image for tissue characterization
What is the aim of the project?
To learn the principle of ultrasound imaging and the programming of ultrasound imaging process. The purpose of programming is to analyze ultrasound backscattering and speckle pattern for tissue characterization
What techniques and methods are used?
Computer programming using the software Matlab and some experiments on phantoms
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
To cultivate the experimental ability and computer programming techniques on ultrasound images, students will be asked to do some experiments on self-made phantoms and to write their own codes using Matlab software for analyzing the properties of scatterers.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The tutor will arrange some training for the students
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?

What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Students who are interested in ultrasound imaging can choose this research project. During the period of study, students will learn the fundamentals of ultrasound imaging, especially for experimental operations, data acquisition, programming with Matlab computer language, and data analysis
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
