Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Angiostrongylus and Schistosoma are parasitic helminth which cause disease in humans. The primary causative agent of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in endemic regions is the nematode Angiostrongyluscantonensis. previously restricted to countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands; however, more recently, it has been reported from other regions, including Brazil. We work on developing sensitive and specific test for diagnosis.
What is the aim of the project?
So, the project aim to find targets for immunological and molecular diagnosis.
What techniques and methods are used?
For that will be used observation and participation in animal handling for life cycle maintenance. Also will be used molecular tools such as real time PCR, proteomics, metagenomics, and molecular cloning for producing recombinant or synthetic molecules as antigens. Also magnetism and electronic microscopy for Schistosoma eggs detection. Bioinformatics software will be used too.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?

Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)

What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Student must be motivated for learning. No special skills are needed. No legal limitation; the student should prepare a final report of its experience on the exchange.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
