What is the background of the project?
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reports that more than half (53%) of the adult population in the OECD countries are overweight or obese. Obesity is one of the major risk factors for malignant tumors in the breasts of postmenopausal women, colon, kidney, esophagus, gallbladder and pancreas.Natural killer (NK) cells are the first defense against malignant cells and their functions are severely impaired in obese humans. To date it is not known which molecular mechanisms are altered in obesity or if functions can be reactivated after weight loss. In our project we investigate cellular and subcellular mechanisms of natural killer cell dysfunctions in obesity to understand the higher risk to develop cancer and metastases of obese humans. In this project we will use Immunohistology, Western blot techniques, real time-PCR (polymerase chain reaction), cell migration essays and cytotoxicity essays. The minimum length is 4 weeks and the maximum length would be 8 weeks.
What is the aim of the project?

What is the role of the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will be part of our group (1 PI, 3 postdocs, 2 technicians and 5-10 doctoral students). She / he will investigate an interesting issue within the above described project. She / he will observe the techniques and methods performed by the group members. Further the student will be able to perform western blots and real time PCRs on her/his own.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
The student should have basic scientific skills, e.g. pipetting, to aliquot and other basic laboratory work. A scientific report is not demanded after the exchange.
