Evaluation of quality of life in patients submitted to Direct Antiviral therapy versus HCV infection
Universita degli Studi di Catania
: Unit of Infectious Diseases, Hospital Garibaldi Nesima via Palermo 636 I-95100 Catania (Italy)
Prof. Bruno Cacopardo
Dr Francesco Benanti
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Currently, therapy of chronic HCV hepatitis and cirrhosis is possible by a feasible and safe treatment using direct antiviral agents, in detail protease inhibitors, NS5a inhibitors, polymerase inhibitors. Treatment is successful in more than 90% cases with definitive virus eradication. A great number of antiviral drugs is pangenotypic which means that act on genotype 1 to 4 HCV infection.
What is the aim of the project?
The study aims to evaluate whether eradication of viremia coincides with amelioration of neurocognitive functions and quality of life, since HCV is a multiorgan virus affecting multiple functions apart from hepatic ones
What techniques and methods are used?
Clinical evaluation, fibrosis staging, viremia evaluation, administration of neurocognitive tests and quality of life questionnaires, statistical analysis
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will be involved in analysis of data and statistical evaluation. The student will be helping the tutor in clinical evaluation on the single patients involved in the research program.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Theoretical teaching provided
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
No specific skills are required
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months) - Pre-Medical students from the American-British system
