Synthesis, purification and structural characterization and quality control of creatine derivatives for the cure of creatine transporter deficiency.
Universita degli Studi di Genova
University of Genova - Center of Excellence for Biomedical Research via De Toni, 2 ? 16132 ? Genova (Italy)
Prof. Antonio Uccelli
Proff. Enrico Millo e Gianluca Damonte
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
The creatine/phosphocreatine system is an important buffer of high-energy phosphates in skeletal muscle and brain useful to recharge ATP at times of energy deprivation. The creatine transporter deficiency syndrome is a disease caused by a defective creatine transporter into the central nervous system. Up today this disease is untreatable because creatine cannot cross neither the blood?brain barrier nor the cell plasma membranes. Possible strategies to overcome this condition are to create chimeras in which creatine is coupled to molecules which have their own carrier, whose exploitation as a trojan horse could allow creatine to cross biological membranes. Alternatively, creatine could be conjugated to apolar moieties to make it more lipophilic, in such a way that it may more easily cross biological membranes.
What is the aim of the project?
The specific aim of the project is to design, synthesize and structurally characterize creatine derivatives to be tested in
What techniques and methods are used?
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
He will learn the scientific methodology through the planning of experiments and the critical discussion of the obtained results. In detail she/he will be practically involved in chemical synthesis and instrumental analysis
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
No specific skill are required. The students are asked to be interested in basic research work.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months)
- A new method to synthesize creatine derivatives. Amino Acids. 2013 Oct;45(4):821-33.
