Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
The projects will be focused on cardiovascular epidemiology (myocardial infarction incidence rates trends, cardiovascular risk factors) and on the identification of genetics variants and epigenetics factors associated with cardiovascular traits.
The aim of the study is to study epidemiological aspects of cardiovascular disease and to identify genetic markers associated with cardiovascular disease.
Epidemiological methods, basic biostatistics (R) and basic genetic methods will be used to select genetic variants associated to several determinants for Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) within the population. More specifically, methods such as PCR, obtaining genome-wide genotypes from databases, cross-sectional population surveys and meta-analysis will be used.
What is the aim of the project?
- To study epidemiological aspects of cardiovascular disease - To identify genetic markers associated with cardiovascular disease
What techniques and methods are used?
Epidemiological methods, basic biostatistics (R) and basic genetic methods will be used to select genetic variants associated to several determinants for Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) within the population. More specifically, methods such as PCR, obtaining genome-wide genotypes from databases, cross-sectional population surveys and meta-analysis will be used.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will help the researchers develop the project and he/she is expected to dedicate a minimum of 6h a day to obtain data from participants in the study and analyse them in the laboratory's computers. At first he/she will be expected to read the literature and then contribute to the progression of the study by obtaining and analysing data from participants using the methods explained above. As a final outcome, a final report summarizing all the activities undertaken during the stay is required.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
No
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Recommended: basic knowledge of R Software
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
