Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Vitamin D is a multifunctional pro-hormone and has widespread actions in human body. Several studies showed a possible association between vitamin D deficiency and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes, but no definite conclusion was available. The aim of the project is the evaluation of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in Greek patients with type 2 diabetes and peripheral neuropathy and the possible correlation with the severity of the disease. The techniques used are: 1) Serum Vitamin D measurements by Radioimunoassay Method (RIA) in the laboratory of Nuclear Medicine Dept. with commercial kits. 2) whole body bone scans with 925 MBq 99mTc-MDP using tomographic gamma - Camera (GE Millennium MPR,MPS U.S.A) and dual head tomographic gamma ? Camera SIEMENS ( Germany)

What is the role of the student?
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
- If the project is clinical
- the student will take active part in the clinical examination
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Nuclear Medicine Techniques and Examinations
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes if needed
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Pregnant women are not allowed in the Nuclear Medicine Deartment, as it may be harmful for the embryo. No pregnant students will be allowed to participate in this project.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
