What is the background of the project?
Health Literacy (HL) is defined as the knowledge and ability to assess, understand, appraise and apply health-related information. Elderly people who have adequate HL can apprehend the health information, improve doctor-patient communication, facilitate self-efficacy, and empower self-management of their health. The aim of this research is to develop the individualized HL program to promote physical, psychological and social health for the elderly. We anticipate that this Geriatric HL platform will be feasible and efficient for enhancing geriatric HL and promoting comprehensive health.In addition, this individualized HL program will be successfully implemented at the local area/country of the exchange student to promote health for the elderly after this research exchange project in Taipei Medical University. The minimum length of duration is 1 month and the maximum length is 3 months.
What is the aim of the project?
This project has two primary objectives. The first aim is to explore and develop the core concepts and theoretical model of geriatric HL for health promotion with the reference of the integrated model of HL proposed by European Health Literacy Survey consortium. The second and ultimate aim is using an individualized HL programs to promote physical, psychological and social health for the elderly and examine the effectiveness of geriatric HL programs will significantly improve physical, psychological and social health in elderly people.

What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Some preliminary biostatics and public health courses are required. If the international students lackthe basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese or Taiwanese to interview elders, we will arrange a tutor and other native medical student to assists. Students must also be willing and capable of communicating with the elderly. A scientific report is not demanded but is welcome.
