New modalities in diagnostic work-up and management of prostate cancer
Czech Republic (IFMSA CZ) - Charles University in Plzen, Plzen

prof. Milan Hora, M.D., Ph.D., MBA
ass. Viktor Eret, M.D., Ph.D.
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in elderly men and needs to be early detected not only by total and free prostate specific antigen (PSA) serum levels but also by new PSA isoforms. A new promising marker seems to be the [-2] form of proPSA (p2PSA). All three forms (total PSA, free PSA and p2PSA). All these three forms are used for calculation of a new formula so- called prostate health index (PHI). Moreover, this project focuses on new diagnostic imaging in the work-up of prostate cancer. This includes 3 tesla magnetic resonance imaging (3T MRI), hybrid techniques - positron emission tomography/ magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging (PET/CT) and potentially a MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy of the prostate
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of this project is to get acquainted with new modalities in diagnostic work-up and management of prostate cancer including new diagnostic imaging tools (mentioned above).
What techniques and methods are used?
3 tesla magnetic resonance imaging (3T MRI), hybrid techniques - positron emission tomography/ magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging (PET/CT) and potentially a MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy of the prostate.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?

Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
There are articles provided as a theoretical background.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
There are no special knowledge or certain level of studies needed and no any legal limitations in the student's involvement in the project.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
