What is the background of the project?
We have previously demonstrated that dietary supplementation with inorganic nitrate, to boost the alternative nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway, attenuates angiotensin II (ANG II)-induced hypertension. Increasing number of studies emphasized an important communication between the brain and the kidney in mediating or modulating the development or progression of hypertension.2-6 In particular, modulation of neural sympathetic outflow and immune cell activation in the kidney, following ANG II infusion, seem to be important. Currently, there is lack of knowledge regarding the influence of inorganic nitrate supplementation on neuronal function(s) and the immune system, in particular in conditions with renal and cardiovascular disease including hypertension.
What is the aim of the project?
Investigate whether the protective effects of inorganic nitrate, during development of hypertension, are partly mediated via changes in specific brain regions that are important for blood pressure regulation or in regulation of sympathetic nerve activity.
What techniques and methods are used?
Are going to be used experimental model of arterial hypertension; molecular biology techniques; tissue harvesting; data analysis; microscopy.
