What is the background of the project?
Legionella species are ubiquitous bacteria that live in aquatic environments. Legionnaires is a severe infection caused by Legionella species, primarilyL. pneumophila. L. pneumophila is responsible for 90% of infections. The disease typically presents as pneumonia and symptoms may include a high fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea.
What is the aim of the project?
This lab studies the prevalence of Legionella pneumophila in fresh water systems and in clinical samples obtained from suspected pneumonia patients. The laboratory research focuses on studying the ecology of Legionella spp. in water systems in Palestine and the prevalence of Legionellosis in Palestine. As well as studying the virulence of Legionella pneumophila strains isolated from Palestinian environments and suspected pneumonia patients.
What techniques and methods are used?
Techniques: 1-Basic bacteriology methods for isolation of Legionella sp. 2-Preparation of bacteriologic media 3-Isolation of Legionella on bacteriologic media by the streak plate technique legionella count after incubation 4- Preparation of bacteria for storing the isolates in the deep freezer 5- DNA extraction from environmental and respiratory specimens 6- Polymerase chain reaction for molecular identification of Legionella sp.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
A small report summarizing the work done and results
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
