What is the background of the project?
Cancer patients are additively treated with classical homeopathy. Patients receiving conventional chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or surgery may also receive classical homeopathy. Patients are suffering from side effects of chemotherapy (appetite loss, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, weakness, sleep disturbances, etc.) and radiation (radiation induced dermatitis, abscess, etc.), from secondary diseases as well as from decreased life quality. Homeopathy helps to reduce side effects and to heal secondary diseases. A recent prospective study has shown an improvement of life quality. Furthermore, a retrospective study has revealed that survival in patients with advanced stages of tumors has improved. At present, a prospective study regarding survival in patients with non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) stage IV is conducted. The aim of the project is to introduce students into the world of classical homeopathy following the rules as established by Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy. What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to introduce students into the world of classical homeopathy following the rules as established by Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy. Homeopathy is characterized by the “Law of Similars”, which means that a remedy which is able to cause symptoms in a healthy patient is also able to heal a patient suffering from similar symptoms. E.g. cutting onions might cause lachrimation and rhinitis, while taking onion in homeopathic preparation might help to cure lachrimation as well as rhinitis (“like cures like”). Students will participate in life homeopathic anamnesis and search for the individualized remedy.
What techniques and methods are used?
Homeopathic anamnesis is performed regarding family history, children diseases, past diseases, as well as current symptoms and diseases with special emphasis on outstanding symptoms together with modalities, accompanying symptoms, aggravations and ameliorations is performed. Hahnemann and his followers have written together all the mental, emotional as well as physical symptoms experienced during the so-called “remedy provings”. Since the number of symptoms is very large, the symptoms are put together in a head-to-foot scheme providing rubrics which include the remedies able to produce the respective symptoms. Looking to the rubrics, the homeopath decides which remedy fits best for the respective patient in the respective situation using books (so-called repertories) or computer programs. Thereby, the individualized remedy is searched for by using the homeopathic principle “Like cure likes”. Furthermore, the special preparation of homeopathic remedies is explained. Teaching includes studies regarding evidence-based-medicine (EBM) explain studies and meta-analyses about homeopathy. Furthermore, the guidelines and rules of homeopathy are discussed using the book “Organon of Medicine” by Hahnemann (6th Edition).
What is the role of the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student may follow me to the study patients and is involved in the whole study procedure from a medical as well as from an organizational side. The student will accompany me to the Outpatient´s Unit of the Medical University of Vienna as well as to the Outpatient´s Unit of the Otto Wagner Hospital (urban hospital in Vienna). By using the symptoms of the anamnesis, he will find out the adequate homeopathic remedy using computerized repertorisation. In addition, the student will help to collect the questionnaires and to fill out the study documents. Furthermore, the results of the questionnaires are filled in into the statistical computer program.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
The student should read literature provided by the tutor ahead. The student is not allowed to perform anamnesis by himself in the absence of the tutor. In addition, the student has to contact the office of the Department: Before starting the project, the student should read the Organon of Hahnemann (6th Edition) first, and then join the homeopathic anamnesis at the Outpatients Unit
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
