[Chihuahua] Model Nerve Injury and repair in rats: objective assessment of axonal regeneration
Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua
Plastic Surgery Department
Dr. Raul Manuel Favela Campos
Ernesto Raul Paz, Manuel Gardea, Humberto Ba
Required: English, Accepted: Spanish
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Studies have been done about the axonal regeneration. We evaluate the axonal regeneration by measuring the nerve conduction velocity. The axonal regeneration is extremely limited after spinal chord injury. Sensitive and functional deficits persist after the injury where the axonal disconnection happens. This is different in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), where long- distance axon regeneration and substantial functional recovery can occur. Both extracellular molecules and the intrinsic growth capacity of the neuron influence regenerative success.
What is the aim of the project?
Evaluate the nerve conduction velocity and compare with the histological changes
What techniques and methods are used?
Population of 20 rats, 3 groups are formed. 3 groups are formed. The first group are the control goup, group number 2 its performed nerve serction and repeat the third group, as the group two aid neuropraxia proximal to the site of neurorrahapy.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Assist in the development of research. Perform microsurgical techniques. Monitoring of animal research. We expect that the student will take the most of our investigations here at the Plastic Surgery Department of our school. We will help him/her to achieve its / their goals.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Wound repair, Knowledge of sutures, No legal limitations we demand a great conduct and the student
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months) - Pre-Medical students from the American-British system
