Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
The interested student will be involved in two different on-going projects which tap into bipolar disorder and psychosis. Cognitive impairment is now considered core symptoms of psychiatric disorders. Therefore, the specific assessment of cognitive performance and the treatment of core symptoms from the perspective of cognition are of great importance.
The objective of the two projects is the establishment of cognitive symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder and the treatment of hallucinations in patients with psychosis through a metacognitive training.
The techniques and methods that will be used are a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, structured interviews to evaluate psychopathology of patients and psychological techniques.
What is the aim of the project?
The objective of the two projects is the establishment of cognitive symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder and the treatment of hallucinations in patients with psychosis through a metacognitive training.
What techniques and methods are used?
The techniques and methods that will be used are a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, structured interviews to evaluate psychopathology of patients and psychological techniques.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
During the research exchange the student will learn how to explore a psychiatric patient from a neuropsychological point of view, and the different tests that are normally used. The student will also attend the psychological sessions of metacognitive training He/she will act as an observer. The student will be taught about the similarities and differences between these two approaches in our department. He/she will be involved in some of the analyses performed with the data to learn about statistics and interpretation of the data.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes. The interested students will attend to weekly journal and clinical sessions and personalised tutoring will be provided (including readings, lectures and discussion of practical issues)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
- The student will prepare a scientific report
- The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Great interest in learning about research in mental health is the only requeriment. Not legal limitations. The student will do a brief report of the work developed
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
